Improved quality stability through advanced composite spinning of heterogeneous polymers
Bio-based material adopted for eco-friendly synthetic leather in domestic car interiors
Daehan Synthetic Fibers, a textile and petrochemical affiliate of the Taekwang Group, announced on the 29th that it has successfully commercialized a bio-based polyester yarn for automotive interiors by applying its advanced composite spinning technology to bio-derived raw materials.
The newly commercialized yarn is a high-performance, eco-friendly polyester made from plant-based bio materials. By adopting a composite spinning process, the company has achieved enhanced quality stability. The yarn can be used as a sustainable synthetic leather material, offering a texture similar to natural suede while providing excellent anti-soiling properties.
Composite spinning is a sophisticated technique that produces yarn by simultaneously extruding different types of polymers. In contrast to conventional spinning—commonly used for microfiber production but prone to reduced productivity and quality—composite spinning protects ultra-fine filaments during production, improving overall yarn quality and stability.
Daehan Synthetic Fibers already applies this spinning method to products such as headosa, PN split yarn, latent crimp yarn, and LMF yarn.
The new bio-based yarn is expected to be applied to upcoming vehicle models from a leading domestic automaker. In addition to this, Daehan Synthetic Fibers has also been supplying recycled PET-based materials for automotive interiors.
As the automotive industry places greater emphasis on eco-friendly materials, Daehan’s bio-based yarn is emerging as a key partnership element for automakers. The company plans to participate as a R&D partner in expanding the use of sustainable materials across global production sites of Korean car brands.
A Daehan Synthetic Fibers spokesperson stated,
“This development demonstrates not only the use of bio-based raw materials and recycled resources but also the real-world industrial application of sustainable solutions,”
adding that the company will continue expanding applications beyond textiles and interiors to automotive interiors, water filtration, and other industrial sectors.
Founded in 1963 as Daehan Synthetic Fiber Co., Ltd., the company has developed polyester yarns and composite materials for over 60 years. In line with Taekwang Group’s sustainability-driven business expansion and bio-based fiber production strategy, Daehan Synthetic Fibers aims to lead the eco-friendly materials market in automotive interiors.
